What are the the three R's?
This page is dedicated to all the special birds that have come into my life, if for a short time, and then moved into the hearts and lives of their new familys, forever.
The rescue portion of the aviary is totally seperate from the breeders, pets, and show birds. This is something I do on the side, because I believe that every bird deserves a second chance. These birds are not bred or shown while in my care, as they take on a "retired" title while here. I have occasionally kept a few as pets though, or simply did not rehome them because they are just to wild to place safely.
I believe that education is the key to keeping the number of unwanted birds to a minimum. The rescues that come here are evaluated, treated and then re-homed when ready. I hope you enjoy the before and after pictures of just a few that have left a very special place in my heart.
On a side note, I do NOT "buy" rescues, and do not pay to take them,, except in extreme situations. I get nothing for them when they are re-homed, except reimbursement for a vet check. When I am looking to purchase birds, I will do so from a reputable breeder. I have recieved many calls asking me to take in birds, and then been asked to pay for them. I do not get help doing this, and so I can not justify the cost. There are plenty of people out there looking for cheap birds, I am not one of them. I will however go out of my way to help find homes for said birds. I feel that it is far better to home birds that are already here, and in need of a home, than breeding more. Bless you all and keep loving these featherd kids that come into our lives.

Rescue...
Rescue refers to operations that usually involves the saving of life or prevention of injury. To locate, take in, and rehabilitate.
Rehabilitation...
Rehabilitation is the process of removing from a dangerous or harmful environment and caring for injured, neglected, abused, or otherwise unwanted cockatiels and other birds. The goal of rehabilitation is to provide temporary food, shelter, and medical care of these birds until I can ready them for adoption to new homes at a reasonable cost to the new owners.
Re-home...
Re-home means to find a suitable human companion or a family that is capable and willing to take on the responsibility of a cockatiel or other bird. I do my best to find permanent homes, or at very least long term, loving foster families for all birds that comes through these doors.
Here at Sweet Pea Aviary, I believe that every bird deserves a second chance, from the smallest finch to the largest macaw. I also believe that there are no "bad" birds, only good birds that have had bad experiences that change them forever. However, this does not mean that the bird cannot get better and tamed down when shown the love, understanding and kindness that it needs and deserves. Many people do not realize that parrots need daily human interaction and companionship. If a person buys a sweet love-able hand tamed baby, plays with them for a few weeks and then get bored and looses interest in them, they will revert back to a "wild" nature in a very short time. The bird is then relinquished to a cage for months till their human decides to take them out again, and then they wonder why sweet "Polly" bites them. I try to keep my rehabilitation birds' numbers to a minimum so that I can give them enough individual attention to work with them and gain their trust. Trust is the key in working with all parrots, and if the bird does not trust you then the work you try to do is pointless. The majority of birds that come here are fairly small such as cockatiels, love birds, conures, parakeets and finches, however occasionally I do accept amazons, macaws, cockatoos and other large birds so long as there is cage space and enough time to give them what they need. This is ONLY when I have the space and time, as such special birds take more time and are far more difficult to care for in addition to a full running aviary with minimal staff. I believe that education is the key to making both parrots and their humans happy. Included in every adoption is a life long availability of myself, via internet or phone, for any questions, advice, or suggestions. These birds are my LIFE, and I will do everything in my power to do all I can for them. I also offer educational workshops and lectures to anyone who wants them, and there is no charge for them. I am available for up to two hours at a time, with some of my birds, where they can be seen, handled and learned about. I can also answer questions and give suggestions as to where to go to get the best prices on food, toys and other supplies. Please let me help you help them. I will also share with you my involvement in the National Cockatiel Society, and have applications available to anyone who wishes to join. Call between 9 am and 9 pm to set up an appointment to share these magnificent birds, and I look forward to seeing you soon, blessings Ruth
Donations are always welcome...
There are many things your donations can help with including the cost of food, corn cob bedding, perches, and toys. If you are concerned where your donation is being used, you can also donate the actual items to the birds. Every little bit helps. I cannot thank you enough, in advance, for your kindness and generosity. We are currently looking for glass water bottles, corn cob bedding, stay fresh bedding, and toys. Anything you can spare would be helpful. Food will also be accepted as well. I have posted suggested foods we use regularly, to help you choose.
Just a note, there are a few "rescue's" here, that have been taken in, and have been promised to live out their lives in peace and happiness. Their owners had to give them up, by no fault of their own, and these birds will not be re-homed, ever. They were well taken care of before they got here, and will continue to receive the same care here, rather than to be placed in yet another home. They have become members of our big family, and will enjoy their retirement till the end of their natural lives. I am grateful that I have had the opportunity to serve not only their owners but the birds themselves. Thank you, Ruth
